Jenn “the Banana Cake Queen” Sylvester is well-known in the town of Green Valley, TN. Her beauty queen looks, sweet Southern charm, and award winning baking skills are highly appreciated by the residents of Green Valley, and especially by Cletus Winston. Cletus and his fellow bearded, ridiculously handsome brothers own and operate the Winston Brothers auto repair shop. Cletus has come to terms with the fact that he is smitten. He would do anything and everything Jenn Sylvester asked of him. He’s so in love, in fact, that he is planning to propose. If they could just find a few moments alone together. Jenn works night and day at the Donne bakery filling orders and bending over backwards to make her demanding mother, Diane, happy. How will she ever have time to spend with Cletus when she can’t get away from the bakery or her mother for a few hours. All Jenn wants is to pick up where she and Cletus left off months ago exploring each other. Jenn wants to spend more time appreciating Cletus’s strong bearded jaw line and kissable lips while he holds her in his big manly arms and whispers gruffly to her. You get the idea. She’s got it baaaaaad for Cletus Winston.
Just when Cletus and Jenn secure some precious alone time, a fowl disaster ensues. Mr. Badcock – the egg supplier for Jenn’s bakery – has suddenly lost all his chickens. Now 61 dead chickens need plucking and salvaging, and 20 more have gone missing. Cletus coaxes the rest of the Winston brood into helping him save the chickens to hopefully help old man Badcock recoup some of the loss by selling whole chickens. But what is Jenn going to do about her egg supply? Those eggs are the very best and her bakery must have the very best!
When more of Jenn’s local suppliers experience similar thefts and disasters, a dark pattern emerges. Someone is sabotaging Jenn’s bakery and her chance at remaining baking champion at this year’s fair. Though they would much rather be spending their time canoodling, Cletus and Jenn begin investigating, and then caring for Jenn’s mother who gets caught up in a fiery situation involving bee boxes. Will the lovebirds solve the mystery and finally have some time together, or is it just plain hopeless?
You’ll have to read it and find out! I promise you’ll love the characters and the town of Green Valley, TN. Of all the Winston Brothers, Cletus is my favorite. He is eerily smart, adorably quirky, and extremely well versed, and his quotes make me laugh out loud. This book is the first in a spin-off, cozy mystery series featuring Cletus Winston and Jenn Sylvester. If you want to read Cletus and Jenn’s origin story, check out Beard Science by Penny Reid. It’s one of my very favorite books!
