Adult Fiction book review

Totally Folked by Penny Reid

Librarian Laura’s Review of Totally Folked

Totally Folked is the first book in the new Good Folk series by Penny Reid, publishing July 20th 2021. It can be read as a standalone, but can also be enjoyed even more when read as a companion novel to Penny’s Winston Brothers series, all of which are set in Green Valley, Tennessee.

As always, it was such a joy to be back in my very favorite fictional town of Green Valley, Tennessee once again, in the midst of bearded brothers and the sassy ladies who have their hearts. Though many of the beloved Winston brothers, especially Jethro and Cletus, make quite the appearance in this book, the real star of the show is one Sheriff’s Deputy, Jackson James. Or, as Rae refers to him, “Deputy Dreamy,” which is totally fitting, in my opinion.

Jackson James, son of Sheriff Jeffrey James and his lovely wife, Janet, is a true gentleman, an eligible bachelor, and loyal to a fault. He may have been a little wild with the ladies in his younger days and the unfortunate effects of those decisions still follow him around. However, he has been dating Charlotte and he hopes they can settle down and form a future together, even if it’s a little difficult to be alone on account of her being a single mother of four. Jackson is a bit of a workaholic, opting to keep busy at the office or working on his boat, in order to keep his mind wandering to dangerous territory. Namely, Raquel Ezra. Jackson shared one perfectly memorable night with the beautiful, famous actress when she was in Green Valley five years prior for her friend Sienna’s wedding to Jethro Winston. Though he has wanted to try to contact Raquel since that night so many times, Jackson being the gentleman he is and always true to his word respected Raquel’s wish that their time together be a one night only thing. He can’t help it that he’s been pining for her ever since then.

Hoping to escape the stress of her demanding movie star life in LA, Raquel “Rae” Ezra returns to Green Valley, Tennessee where she visited five years prior for her friend and fellow movie star, Sienna’s, wedding. She never thought she would cross paths again with the hot deputy she shared an unforgettable night with on her last trip to Green Valley, but here he is, looking even more fine in his uniform, putting a major wrench in her plans to lay low for a while in the quiet town. Now all Rae can think about is Jackson and how she can to know him even better this time around. Thankfully for Jackson and Rae, the good folks in Green Valley notice their connection as well. Cletus Winston can’t resist a bit of a matchmaking challenge, especially when it involves making his good buddy Jackson James a bit flustered.

Totally Folked is full of hilarity from the characters which Penny Reid has richly brought to life in her small town romance stories. This modern folktale is full of angst and spicy romance. Readers will have a whole new appreciation for Jackson James and his skills, on and off duty protecting and serving. I can’t wait for the second book in the Good Folks series, coming in 2022!

Thank you to Smartypants Romance and Social Butterfly PR for the early copy of this book in exchange for a review.

Synopsis

One unforgettable night leads to an unlikely shared connection, and unlikely connections never go unnoticed by the good folks in Green Valley, Tennessee. . .

Jackson James follows the rules. He has to. He’s a sheriff’s deputy in a super small town with a super big personality. However, strict adherence to the law during the day has been enjoyably balanced by rakish rules at night. Jackson, typically happy to protect and serve (and serve, and serve), starts questioning the value of wayward evenings when they begin to feel more like being waylaid rather than getting laid. Could it be that Green Valley’s most eligible—and notorious—bachelor longs for something (and someone) real?

Mega movie star Raquel Ezra follows only one rule: always leave them wanting more. Strict adherence to this single rule has served her well. Studio execs, reporters, audiences, fans, lovers—no one can get enough of the smart, savvy, and sexy bombshell. But when “generous offers” begin to feel more like excessive demands, years of always leaving has the elusive starlet longing for something (and perhaps someone) lasting.

When Raquel abruptly returns to the quirky Tennessee hamlet, her path crosses with the delectable deputy with whom she spent one unforgettable night. Unfortunately, scandal and intrigue soon follow. Raquel and Jackson must decide which is more important: following their rules? Or, at long last, finding something real.
