Librarian Laura’s Review of Love Next Door
Love Next Door is the first book in the new Lakeside series by Helena Hunting. The story takes place in lake side suburb of Chicago called Pearl Lake. If you’ve read any of the All In series by Helena, you’ll be glad to hear about the Bowman’s and their fancy building projects being handled by Love Next Door’s main female character Dillion’s family construction business.
Dillion Stitch left her small hometown of Pearl Lake many years ago to live in the big city of Chicago, and she really had no intention of returning home where everyone knows everyone’s business. But when her brother Billy gets into trouble and isn’t able to work alongside their father in the family construction business, Dillion dutifully returns to help out for a while. Though a lot has changed since she left, Dillion finds herself enjoying family dinners and reuniting with her old friends from high school. Their longtime neighbor, Bee, who took Dillion under her wing like her own granddaughter over the years has passed away, but Bee’s cottage still stands next door, serving as a reminder of the loving, generous woman and the full life she lived in Pearl Lake. As executor of the estate, Dillion goes to check out the cottage after seeing a strange vehicle parked there. Nothing can prepare her for the eyeful she receives when she catches the tenant unaware as he is leaving the shower. Though he is gorgeous and easy on the eyes, Donovan “Van” Firestone, Bee’s beloved grandson, instantly gets under Dillion’s skin and they begin to bicker all over town. Throw in a little forced proximity and beautiful lake scenery, however, and the sparring turns into sizzling chemistry neither can deny. As Van and Dillion grow closer, both must face up to their own difficult family issues and decide where their hearts choose as home.
Helena has written a beautiful love story with a major emphasis on family and forgiveness. I look forward to more books in the series, and I’m hoping they feature some of the side characters from this book, such as Dillion’s brother Billy, Van’s sister Teagan, or Aaron, who works for the Stitch family business. No matter which character will get their story next, I’m ready to go back to Pearl Lake again.
Thank you to Social Butterfly PR for providing me with an early review copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
When Dillion Stitch left her hometown, she had no intention of going back. But when her brother gets into trouble, Dillion reluctantly agrees to return home to take her place at the family business.
Being back in Pearl Lake after all these years feels familiar, but also brings a few surprises. She’s quick to notice that someone new has shown up at the cottage next door. Dillion gets more than an eyeful when she goes to check out the newcomer and meets Donovan “Van” Firestone—her beloved neighbor’s grandson—in all his unclothed glory.
Having gotten off to a rocky start, it’s not long before they begin bickering with each other all over town. All that back and forth inevitably sparks an undeniable attraction. But Dillion’s family has issues, Van’s family resents him, and neither Dillion nor Van feels truly at ease in the small town. For these Pearl Lake exiles, home isn’t just where the heart is—it’s where things get complicated.
